Dean Collins : Americana-tinged Power Pop That Already Sounds Like A Modern Classic

“Growing up in rural Indiana and Kentucky, Dean Collins dreamed of flying and making music when he was a kid. He formed his first band and recorded his first album while in college and flew for the US Navy for 20 years after graduating. Flash forward 32 years and he has just released 12 new songs with the help of some industry legends. Anchored by Kenny Aronoff on drums and percussion, ‘Borrowed Time’ has been described as “Americana-tinged Power Pop that already sounds like a modern classic.” It has received airplay on Sirius XM radio and is starting to generate buzz within the music business and the reviews have been stellar. Mixed and engineered by a Grammy winning production team including Thom Russo, Brad Wood, Ralph Cacciurri, Fabrizzio Grossi, Jason Achilles and Gavin Lurssen, the tracks glide effortlessly between genres. The songs are love letters to the bands and musicians who inspired Dean growing up on the family farm. There are musical nods to Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, The Replacements, The Police, XTC, The Beatles, U2 and John Mellencamp. 

‘Borrowed Time’ explores the challenges and rewards in making the best of the limited time we have and the lyrics have depth not usually found in today’s music. The words and melodies can stand up separately as well as they do together and the listener who wishes to dig a little deeper will be rewarded. Featuring a songwriting team of one, this self produced album is free of beats and top writers and was made the way music used to be made for people who love music the way they used to make it. The all star lineup has over 55 Grammys between them and Gavin Lurssen makes it sound like a million bucks.

Growing up on a Farm in Kentucky, Dean recalled being gobsmacked the first time he heard ‘Scarecrow’ by John Mellemcamp. He said that hearing a song written about losing the family farm was like a gut punch as small farms in Bardstown, KY were starting to be auctioned off in the early eighties. “That snare with the metallic ring was like a hammer to the head and I was stunned by the power in Kenny’s deceptively simple drumming.” Dean said. Mellencamp’s follow-up ‘The Lonesome Jubilee’ was a masterpiece from an artist and band at the top of their game. For Dean, working with Kenny has been a dream come true (if slightly surreal) and a chance to create the songs he’s always wanted to create with someone who grew up with the same Midwestern values. The opening track ‘Denial Changes Everything’ kicks off the album like a cannon shot and certainly gives a tip of the hat to ‘Paper in Fire.’ The explosive beginning, tension, and eventual release and redemption all follow the story arc of escaping an abusive relationship and were the result of lengthy discussions and meticulous planning. Also on the album, you will hear Jimmy Zavala on harmonica. Considered by many to be one of the world’s best harp players, he has played with the Eurythmics, Rod Stewart, Etta James and Tom Petty. He was on the stage with Petty during Live Aid and first played with Kenny on John Cougar’s ‘American Fool’ back in 1982.

At the present time, the band is unsigned and only exists in the studio. Dean’s career as a Captain for a major airline makes live performances difficult and having a drummer who is one of the most in-demand and prolific in the world only adds to the challenge. They will be back in the studio in Los Angeles next month to lay the foundation for a follow up album which will feature the same amazing lineup as the first as well as a few surprises.
