Looking back, what personal experiences have most shaped the songwriter you are today?Jenna: I think the experiences that have shaped me the most are the moments when life didn’t go according to plan. Heartbreak, disappointment, growing up, moving away from everything familiar, and figuring out who I am outside of other people’s expectations have all found their way into my songs. Writing has always been my way of processing emotions and making sense of life’s messier moments. Every challenge has given me another story to tell and another reason to keep creating.
2. Before building your career in Nashville, you developed a strong background in musical theater and performance. How has that theatrical training influenced the way you approach songwriting, recording, and performing on stage?
Jenna: Musical theater taught me how to tell a story and connect emotionally with an audience. Every song has a character, a conflict, and a resolution, just like a scene in a show. When I record, I focus on delivering the emotion behind the lyrics, not just singing the notes. On stage, that training helps me fully step into the story of each song and create an experience that people can feel.
3. Many artists relocate to Nashville with big dreams, but the reality can be challenging. What were some of the biggest lessons you learned during your transition from St. Louis to Nashville, both personally and professionally?
Jenna: One of the biggest lessons I learned is that success doesn’t happen overnight. Nashville is full of incredibly talented people, and it quickly teaches you humility and perseverance. Personally, I learned how to become more independent and trust myself. Professionally, I learned that relationships matter just as much as talent. Building genuine connections and showing up consistently has been one of the most valuable parts of my journey.
4. Your music blends nostalgic pop-rock energy with modern storytelling. Artists such as Avril Lavigne, Hayley Williams, and Pat Benatar have been mentioned as influences. What elements of their artistry resonate most with you, and how have you transformed those inspirations into something uniquely your own?
Jenna: What I admire most about those artists is their fearlessness. They never seemed afraid to speak their minds, be vulnerable, or take up space. I love the energy, attitude, and authenticity they bring to their music. I’ve taken inspiration from that confidence while combining it with my own experiences, storytelling style, and perspective. My goal has never been to sound like someone else, but to take what inspires me and turn it into something that feels genuinely Jenna Kay.
5. Your latest project, Smartsass, connected strongly with listeners and achieved impressive chart success. What did that project represent for you creatively, and what do you believe audiences connected with most?
Jenna: Smartsass was a huge turning point for me. It represented confidence, growth, and embracing who I am without apologizing for it. The songs are honest, playful, emotional, and sometimes a little sarcastic. I think listeners connected with the fact that the project doesn’t pretend to be perfect. It reflects real emotions and real experiences, and people saw pieces of themselves in those stories.
6. Throughout your catalog, there is a recurring theme of turning difficult emotions into empowerment. When writing songs about heartbreak or personal struggles, how do you balance vulnerability with strength?
Jenna: For me, vulnerability is strength. Being honest about pain doesn’t make you weak, it shows courage. I try to write from a place of truth, even when it’s uncomfortable. But I also want listeners to leave a song feeling stronger than when they started. Even if a song begins with heartbreak, I want it to end with hope, growth, or a reminder that you can get through difficult seasons.
7. One phrase often associated with your brand is “Just Tie a Bow Around It.” What does that mantra mean to you today, and why do you think it resonates with so many people navigating their own challenges?
Jenna: To me, “Just Tie a Bow Around It” means embracing life’s imperfections. It doesn’t mean pretending everything is perfect, it means choosing to move forward despite the challenges. We all carry scars, setbacks, and difficult experiences. Sometimes the best thing we can do is accept them as part of our story and keep going. I think that message resonates because everyone has something they’re trying to overcome.
8. You have built a reputation as both a musician and a professional makeup artist. Creativity plays a role in both worlds. Do these two artistic outlets influence one another, and how do they help you express your identity as a creator?
Jenna: Absolutely. Both music and makeup are forms of storytelling and self-expression. A song can communicate an emotion, and so can a look. Both allow me to create something that helps people feel seen, confident, or understood. They may seem like different worlds, but they’re both rooted in creativity and helping people connect with themselves.
9. Your signature logo carries deeply personal symbolism and reflects your relationship with music and resilience. How important is it for your artistry to communicate not only entertainment, but also hope and encouragement for listeners?
Jenna: It’s incredibly important to me. It is of my own design. One day, I took the initiative and had it done right after I made the life changing move to Nashville. It’s my first tattoo and one that symbolizes a moment in life. It is a combination of a music note and semi colon. Music has helped me through some of the hardest moments in my life, and I hope my music can do the same for someone else. If a listener walks away feeling understood, encouraged, or less alone, then I’ve done something meaningful. Entertainment is wonderful, but connection is what lasts.
10. You have performed at several notable Nashville venues while continuing to build a dedicated audience. Is there a particular performance or career moment that made you feel that your dream was becoming a reality?
Jenna: There have been a few moments, but performing in Nashville and hearing people sing my original songs back to me while on stage was incredibly special. Another defining moment was seeing Smartsass chart on iTunes. Those experiences reminded me that people were genuinely connecting with my music, and that made the dream feel very real.
11. As a songwriter, what topics or emotions do you still feel compelled to explore that listeners may not have fully heard from you yet?
Jenna: I think listeners have heard a lot about heartbreak and self-discovery, but I’d love to explore deeper themes like personal growth, finding peace, relationships that heal instead of hurt, and the transition into adulthood. Every season of life brings new perspectives, and I want my songwriting to continue evolving alongside me.
12. You are currently working on new music scheduled for release later this year. Without revealing too many secrets, what can fans expect from this next chapter, and how does it differ from the artist we heard on Smartsass?
Jenna: Fans can expect growth. The new music still has the honesty, attitude, and storytelling they’ve come to expect, but it’s exploring some new territory emotionally and sonically. It’s a little bolder, a little deeper, and reflects where I am in life right now. I’m excited for people to hear a new side of me.
13. The modern music industry often encourages artists to follow trends. How do you stay authentic to your own vision while navigating an industry that is constantly changing?
Jenna: I try to focus on creating music that feels true to me rather than chasing what’s popular in the moment. Trends come and go, but authenticity lasts. If I connect with a song and believe in what I’m saying, chances are someone else will too.
14. When listeners discover Jenna Kay for the very first time, what do you hope they take away from your music after hearing just one song?
Jenna: I hope they feel something. Whether it’s confidence, comfort, nostalgia, empowerment, or simply the feeling of being understood, I want people to connect emotionally. If one song makes someone feel less alone, then that’s a win for me.
15. Looking ahead, what does success mean to you now, and what goals are at the top of your list for the next stage of your career?
Jenna: Success means continuing to grow while staying true to who I am. Of course, I’d love bigger tours, larger audiences, and more opportunities, but I also want to keep creating music that matters. My biggest goals are reaching more listeners, touring nationally, and continuing to build a lasting career as both an artist and songwriter.
16. Your semicolon-inspired logo has become a symbol of your journey and relationship with music. Looking back, what would you say to the younger version of yourself who was still searching for confidence and direction?
Jenna: I would tell her to stop doubting herself. The things that make you different are often the things that make you special. Trust the process, keep showing up, and don’t let fear make decisions for you. Everything you’re going through is preparing you for something bigger.
17. Much of your music embraces imperfection rather than hiding it. Do you think audiences today connect more deeply with artists who show their flaws instead of presenting a polished version of themselves?
Jenna: I do. People are craving authenticity. Social media already shows us enough perfection. What really connects people is honesty. When artists are willing to share their struggles, mistakes, and imperfections, it creates a genuine connection that audiences can relate to.
18. Nashville is often associated with country music, yet you’ve carved out a distinct pop-rock identity. Have there ever been moments where staying true to your sound felt like a risk?
Jenna: Definitely. There have been times when it felt like it might be easier to fit into a different lane, but I’ve always believed authenticity is worth the risk. Nashville has actually taught me that there’s room for all kinds of artists. Staying true to my pop-rock roots has helped me find the audience that’s meant for my music.
