Multi-instrumentalist Shawn Phelps set out to create his most eclectic mix of original work to date

Shawn Phelps is a singer-songwriter based in the United States. He is also a multi-instrumentalist. As a church choir member and later learning trombone at the age of ten, Shawn’s first rock instrument was an electric bass guitar. As his songwriting skills grew, he moved to acoustic guitar and piano. His formal career began by appearing throughout the Mid-Atlantic area for several years in various groups performing original music. He first collaborated with his brother Gary Phelps and the group Penn Central. They entered WDVE Radio contest in nearby Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, focusing on regional talent performing original music. They were successful in being one of only 10 artists on WDVE showcase album entitled “Pittsburgh Rocks”. That first entry into the mainstream “Sometimes”, began a recording career by selling over 10,000 copies. After early success during and after high school, Shawn formed an all original funk-fusion band called The Joneses, while attending Edinboro University. Regional college radio airplay supported a tour throughout area colleges. Touring as a solo act followed and later as an acoustic duo with Texas native Tom Hooker began. Settling on the southern shore of Lake Erie, Shawn’s musical experience grew with such bands as Skylift, Kaos, Scary Gary and the Risk, The Particulars, The Dodgems, Lareau, The Red Hot Rugcutters, and Senor Jones. This career has spanned 40 years. His solo debut album in early 2004, “Urban Scrawl”, was well received and yielded “Must Be The Weather” for inclusion on the first Erie Summer Festival of the Arts celebrated recording. This set the tone for better things to come.

After scoring short film and documentary projects, Shawn set out to create his most eclectic mix of original work to date. Inspired by European influence and live appearances in the Mediterranean from Sorrento to Santorini on to Ireland from Dingle to Dublin, we hope you enjoy and share “PipeDreams”. The next album in cue returns to Shawn’s original rock and roll roots which will be released this year. In the early stages of planning, a cinematic score is in the wings. This work will be based on impressions of natural phenomenon found in nature.
